The Turtles “You Showed Me.”
Ive been in love with this song for a while. I knew it was by the Turtles and I knew De La Soul got sued for it. On this CD it is mis-labeled "Transmissions" by D. Johnson. Don't know if this was done on purpose because of De La's predicament.
I did a search and found this:
De La Soul -“Transmitting Live From Mars”
“Transmitting Live From Mars” set a sample from a French lesson record atop a sample from the 1968 Turtles hit “You Showed Me.” The former Turtles filed a $1.7 million lawsuit, charging their music was sampled without their permission; the case was settled out of court for an undisclosed sum.
Three Feet High and Rising
(#24 pop, #1 R&B, 1989)
yielded a hit single in
“Me Myself and I”
(#34 pop, #1 R&B, 1989),
set to a sample of Funkadelic’s 1979 “(not just) Knee Deep.”
De La Soul then formed “Native Tongues,” a loose alliance with A Tribe Called Quest, the Jungle Brothers, Queen Latifah, Monie Love, and Black Sheep.
Nice to know a little more hip hop history.
Peace. Bird
You're right - it's definitely The Turtles. I can't imagine why it's mislabeled - it's got to be deliberate.
Strictly Breaks records would definitely have the right source, it doesn't look like a typo, and I doubt they'd be concerned about the legal issues (as all their releases are unauthorized to begin with).
If anyone knows, feel free to chime in.
Thank you so much for this. The blog is hot! Keep up the good work!
good lookin out on this!!
Please re-up!!!
Thanks!
