ween-caesar (we were calling this record that until the last moment when we decided to change the title to "quebec")

well what can i say about this here, lemme see. the first thing that comes to mind is that all the while we were doing this we still had claude coleman on drums, he eventually got into a major car wreck and wasn't around when it finally came time to make the "real" record. instead the drum duties fell on me, josh freese, and sim cain for a couple of tunes. almost all of this was recorded at our beach house in holgate, nj onto 16 track tape. a tiny bit of it was recorded in the garage behind aaron's house in pt. pleasant, pa. some of it was recorded in the spare bedroom of my house in new hope. most of the tunes are just me and aaron, with the two of us playing everything, with me on drums. the songs with claude, dave, and glenn are pretty obvious. on just a few tunes we took what you hear here and cleaned them up and had andrew weiss mix them for the record after some overdubs. dave sings on "it's gonna be a long night", this was days before he had surgery to remove polyps in his throat and his voice was really rough so we figured he was the guy for the job. This isn't even all of the tunes that we ended up choosing from, just the ones i happened to burn to cd before we drove home from the beach every week. hope you dig it for what it is.

The Other Side of WAR Warms Your Heart: the sound quality here leaves a bit to be desired (the record's in tough shape) but I haven't seen this posted anywhere else. I don't know a whole lot about this album but I think it was made when the band split and there was some legal wrangling over who could use the name. This "other side of war" is much lighter, understated outing than any of their previous albums. Thanks again to Wireless Mike for the vinyl rip.

Kyuss / Queens of the Stone Age: [LINK BELOW] is a split EP which was released in December 1997. The first three songs are performed by Kyuss and the last three songs by guitarist Josh Homme's next band, Queens of the Stone Age. It includes a cover of the song "Into the Void" by Black Sabbath from their album Master of Reality. "If Only Everything" is an early version of the song "If Only", which appeared on Queens of the Stone Age's eponymous debut album. A re-recorded version of "Born to Hula" appeared as a b-side on one edition of the "Lost Art of Keeping a Secret" single release, and later as a track on the Stone Age Complications EP while this one includes backing vocals by former Kyuss lead singer John Garcia. "Spiders and Vinegaroons" was used as the menu theme for the live DVD/CD release, Over the Years and Through the Woods. "Fatso Forgotso" and "Fatso Forgotso Phase II (Flip the Phase)" were later re-released on Muchas Gracias: The Best of Kyuss.

We’re huge fans of Prince Paul. So naturally, we were geeked to get our hands on Confessions Of A Beat Junkie, a promo tape Tommy Boy put out in ‘97. The 35-minute blend of b-sides, unreleased stuff, famous works, and many skits don’t disappoint—especially if you’re familiar with Paul’s work. Not much info exists, so I wrote Paul and asked him to introduce the tape for us. Here’s his response:

Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed the tape. I made this for Tommy Boy as a promo item in the late ’90s to reintroduce myself to the public. It was to launch off the reissue of Psychoanalysis and a new project, A Prince Among Thieves. I just wanted to make something different from the old traditional mixtape that was out at the time. I had my friends and mom do little intro pieces to the songs.

I wanted to make it appear like I was this elusive, eclectic guy, and they were describing my work to those who weren’t familiar with me. The photo [on the back] is a picture of my son when he was about 3 or 4. He was always facinated with the turntables now he’s a DJ himself at 17. I put a lot of work into that tape, I’m glad that it’s still being enjoyed. Thanks again.

Skull Snaps: was a mysterious funk group that released one eponymous album on the small GSF label in 1973 before disappearing. They were in fact the group originally known as The Diplomats who had released numerous singles between 1963 and 1970 with middling success. Skull Snaps' main claim to fame is not its quality, but that the drum breaks on it have been sampled numerous times on rap and hip-hop records; the familiar opening drum pattern of It's A New Day ( sample (help·info)) can be heard in songs by well-known acts such as Ol' Dirty Bastard, Das EFX, Eric B. & Rakim, Digable Planets, DJ Shadow, and The Prodigy. The first person to sample "It's A New Day" was New Haven, CT Hip Hop artist Stezo on a song entitled "It's My Turn". (wikipedia)

Description from Ninjatune: Well this is a turn up for the books - what's Sesame Street doing on Ninja Tune? Just in time to celebrate the 35th anniversary of their very first show in the US, Sesame Street & Ninja Tune have teamed up to release a super rare disco remix by Larry Levan and the previously unavailable and much loved 'Pinball Number Count' by The Pointer Sisters.

It all started a couple of years ago when Strictly Kev, part of DJ Food, desperately wanted to include the infamous 'Pinball Number Count' on the first 'Solid Steel Presents' mix CD. You know the track, it was super funky and was accompanied by the cool animation of a pinball rolling around strange landscapes. Now this track is the stuff of legends within beat digging circles, DJs have scoured record bins for decades in the hope of finding it included on old Sesame compilations but alas, it was never on any of them.

Fortunately Kev knew this and rang Sesame Workshop in New York asking for a copy of the tape. It never actually made it onto the mix CD but that's another story. What you have here is a composite of numbers
2-12 of the 'Pinball Number Count' animations (number 1 was never created). Kev has re-edited all the key elements and cleaned up the sound while he's at it. And cooing those syncopated numbers and "do-do's" in the background is only the Pointer Sisters on a session
singing assignment.

If that wasn't enough, also included on the release is an extremely rare disco mix of 'C is For Cookie' by Cookie Monster (the original can change hands for up to £100). This fantastic remix is by the late Larry Levan; DJ legend and driving force behind the New York club,The Paradise Garage for 10 years. Many people credit Larry as being the first DJ to play a very eclectic and open-minded mix of music. This was the first remix he did before going on to have a very successful studio career,introducing the dub aesthetic into dance music. As he said at the time "Mel Cheren one day said to me 'you want to mix a record?' There was this song from Sesame Street, called 'C Is For Cookie', and I mixed it, not serious, not getting paid for it or nothing"

Finally, the last track is another beat diggers break nugget and an alternate disco mix of 'C Is For Cookie'. This time late Manhattan disco DJ Roy Thode was the man controlling the faders. Involved in the NY disco scene in the 70's he did remixes for Vanguard Records
and was resident at clubs like 12 West and the Saint. His remix is full of thumping disco breaks that make this more than your average kids record and rounds the package off beautifully.

With all these ingredients in the mix you know exactly what this special release from the Solid Steel crew is doing on Ninja Tune. Look out for more rare Solid Steel selections in this irregular series.

Polka Comes to Your Haus!: this one's a mixed bag but I'm posting it on the strength of the 3 Polkacide tracks.

Polkacide, founded in 1985 by Ward Abronski, was originally organized to play a one-night stand for the 50th anniversary of the Deaf Club in San Francisco. The Deaf Club (which actually is a club for deaf people) had been hiring rock and punk bands to perform for them because they were so loud that club members could dance to them. It was suggested that some of the more elderly members did not want a punk band for the anniversary show. This inspired Abronski to form a "really loud polka band" for the occasion. None of the original members (12 in all) were polka musicians at the time, but they had varied backgrounds in music, including classical, rock, punk and jazz. Clarinetist Neil Kaitner, a.k.a Neil Basa, came up with the name for the band and also designed the band logo, which features a skull and crossed sausages.

Band members were recruited, costumes made (black leather lederhosen with spikes, etc.,) and a repertoire of classic polkas learned in a three-month period leading up to the Deaf Club's 50th anniversary party. One week before the performance was to take place, it was canceled due to noise abatement orders from local authorities. Rather than let their efforts go to waste, the band determined to play at least one performance and managed to be included in a punk show at the Mabuhay Gardens in San Francisco, a major punk venue at the time. Polkacide played loud, fast polkas at a thrashing punk tempo while mowhawk-headed punks stage dived and moshed in the pit along with the punk-dirndl clad Polka Sluts who turned out in support of the band.

Members of other bands that performed that night at the Mabuhay were still talking and laughing about it when they went to play other venues later that week, and word spread to booking agents and club owners about the "Punk Polka Band" Polkacide. The band has been playing ever since.

Tonto Rides Again: (from Wiki) Tonto's Expanding Head Band was an influential electronic music duo from the early 1970s, despite releasing a relatively small number of albums. The project was conceived by two Grammy-winning musicians and sound designers: Malcolm Cecil and Robert Margouleff.

TONTO is an acronym for "The Original New Timbral Orchestra": the world's first (and still the largest) multitimbral polyphonic analog synthesizer, designed and constructed by Malcolm Cecil.TONTO was essentially a series III Moog modular synthesizer expanded and customized with various other manufacturer's modules (Serge with Moog-like panels, Oberheim, EMS, Arp 2500/2600, etc.). TONTO resided at Mutato Muzika studios in the mid 1990s, the headquarters of Mark Mothersbaugh and Devo. The synth has been in the private ownership of Malcolm Cecil since he acquired Robert Margouleff's share of the ownership over two decades ago.

Tonto's Expanding Head Band's first recording, the album Zero Time, on the U.S. Embryo label (distributed by Atlantic Records), was released in 1971 and attracted the attention of many leading artists of that era because of the unique, warm, musical sounds that TONTO was capable of generating. Chief among those artists was Stevie Wonder whose involvement with TONTO started with Music of My Mind and continued through Talking Book, Innervisions, Fulfillingness' First Finale and Jungle Fever, all projects which featured Margouleff and Cecil as associate producers, engineers and programmers. Zero Time was reissued by U.S. Atlantic records in 1975 as just Tonto's Expanding Head Band with a different cover photo.

The TONTO synthesizer was used in Brian De Palma's 1974 movie "Phantom of the Paradise".

[from Wikipedia]:A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector is an album of Christmas songs, produced by Phil Spector, and originally released as Philles 4005 in 1963. Spector treated a series of mostly secular Christmas standards to his trademark "Wall of Sound" treatment, and the selections feature the vocal performances of Spector's regular artists during this period. It is one of only twelve long-playing records released on the Philles label, peaking at #13 on the Top Pop Albums chart. The album was reissued by Apple Records in 1972, with a different record jacket and retitled Phil Spector's Christmas Album; this version went to #6.

However, the album was a relative failure at the time — it was unfortunately released on 22 November 1963, the same day as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Radio stations throughout the US did not play tracks from holiday albums during the period of mourning. In subsequent years, the album grew in popularity, considered now to be a holiday classic. Several of its tracks became iconic Christmas songs for generations, such as the original (and flop) single "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)," and the well-known "Ring-a-ling-a-ling Ding-dong-ding" background vocals in The Ronettes' "Sleigh Ride".

In 2003, the album was ranked number 142 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. The album has been released three times on three different labels: the original release on Philles, the 1972 reissue on Apple, and the current remastered CD release on ABKCO. It also appears as the fourth disc of the Spector box set, Back to Mono.

Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, well-known as a fan of both the Ronettes and Spector, has cited this album as his favorite Christmas album of all time.^[1]

A Ding Dong Dandy Christmas: 1959 lounge/Christmas album recorded by the Three Suns before dragging that woman on the cover into a wooded area and having their way with her. A gal who gets a kick out of things? A kid who spends a lot of time learning that life, after all, is for fun? This album is for those people. It's a gone album, gang, with the kind of melodic surprises we've come to expect from The Three Suns.

The Suns have remained the same over the years. But, as on other of their recent hits, they've added instruments. They've got some novel ones here: chimes, bells, an oboe and two tubas.

The result of this lineup is a collection of melodic Christmas songs with a real crazy rhythm. The beat is Cha-Cha, Merengue and Rock 'n' Roll, all wrapped up in one. These are not carols, mind you, just songs. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer hangs out here, and so does Alvin, star of The Chipmunk Song. Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town in this album, going through a Winter Wonderland to the tune of Jingle Bells as he takes his Sleigh Ride -- all to the fun arrangements of Charles Albertine.

If, after listening to these, you think you've heard everything, hold still a minute as the Suns and their helpers bring a weird, exotic sound to White Christmas and such other lovely tunes as Skaters Waltz and The Christmas Song.

Santa Claus has been pushing his staff at the North Pole hard all year with only one thing in mind: fun. If you want to lend him a helping hand, give this album to someone you really like this Christmas. If he's spirited, if he's swingin', if he's a ding-dong dandy guy, he'll love it.

The Original Soul Christmas

Soul Christmas: the greatest Christmas album of all-time (although perhaps not the most mirthful). King Curtis' "What are You Doing New Years Eve" and Otis Redding's "White Christmas" are my favorites here, but all of the cuts are strong.

Curtom Records was a record label started by Curtis Mayfield of The Impressions along with Impressions associate Eddie Thomas (the bands manger and Jerry Butlers former driver) in 1968 although the name was used as early as 1963. The labels name was a combination of Thomas' surname (Thomas) and Mayfields first name (Curtis) .It is noted for being one of the first ever record labels owned by an African-American recording artist. It was located in Chicago's old RCA studio, acquired by Mayfield for cutting demos. Along with the Impressions' releases and Mayfield's own solo material, artists on or affiliated with Curtom included the Five Stairsteps, Donny Hathaway (principally as a songwriter/orchestration arranger), Linda Clifford, Baby Huey and the Babysitters, Leroy Hutson, The Natural Four, Bobby Whiteside, the Staple Singers, and Mavis Staples' solo efforts. Most of the acts on Curtom's roster were either produced by Mayfield himself, or heavily influenced by his style. Eddie Thomas later developed the Curtom subsidiary Thomas records. Curtis had previously made attempts at a record label with "The Mayfield" and "Windy C" labels

Due to the decline in popularity of soul music, the label went through varying changes of distributions from several labels - first by Buddah Records, then by Warner Bros., RSO Records, and finally Arista Records, before closing for good in 1980. The Curtom master tapes are now owned by the Warner Music Group, and all subsequent reissues have been under Warner's supervision.

This is not music. It's an historical essay on the cultural evolution
of metal from the 70's to the end of the 80's. One 30+ minute collage
of music and words that basically recaps the history of the heavy
during the cocaine years on earth. I think that you would have to be a
rather refined fan of the genre in order to fully appreciate this work
of incomparable genius. If you have a functioning brain, have not
irreparably damaged your mnemonic faculties, possess a sense of humor,
and like everything from Slayer to Steely Dan, then you may well be
amused and even amazed by what you hear here.

Black-death-speed metal in arctic barbarian packaging. On the cover is a
half-nakedwarrior chick riding a polar bear and inside are renderings of
our Vikingesque heroes and there's another nice sketch of one of them
snorting lines of white powder off of an ancient dagger. All this and more
helps to make for some of the funnest schtick-metal you ever heard before
you even get it in the player.  Holy Robert E. Howard! . . .  the songs
(30 of them in 36 minutes) aren't bad either! A lot of "where have I heard
that riff before?" silliness and then total Slayer meets Spinal Tap at an
SCA convention, punctuated by humorous bits of sampling and programming
(even including a bit of Kraftwerk's Trans Europe Express!).  Haw, haw,
haw!  This is the most brilliant piece of tounge-in-cheek metal I've heard
since Godheadsilo's "Share the Fantasy" and Crom goes a hell of a lot
further with the whole thing than they did (emphasis on the "hell").
Shee-at.  I'll keep this one.  Cut the sleeves off your shirt and go rent
River's Edge. Crom Rulz!

The DIX: The Art of Picking Up Women [RE-UP]

Another unusual project from one of my favorite producers, Prince Paul. The Dix is a fictional R&B group from a fictional place called Compton, New York. Its real members are producer Prince Paul, Mr. Len, Mr. Dead and Don Newkirk. Their album, The Art of Picking Up Women, is influenced by both classic funk and soul music as well as contemporary styles such as hip hop and raggamuffin. The album's CD is packaged with a bonus DVD which features a mockumentary about the group. I'm guessing that Paul's inspiration for this was bands like Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts (who I discovered in my father's record collection). More on them on Wikipedia.

Unlike the original (which was produced by just Automator with help from DJ Shadow), the sequel is an assemblage of guest producers, resulting in a sound far less focused than the original.
